Restraint and correct proportion carry the entire result. Column width, arch spring, eave depth, and railing profile all come off the house itself.
That leaves the masonry as the whole of the problem. A new column standing beside ninety year old brick either belongs or it does not, and the difference is the blend, the mortar color, and the way the joint is tooled. We sample against the existing wall in daylight, mix to match the weathering rather than to a catalog number, and tool the joints the way the original mason did.
